can anyone offer any answers to why my 1 year old shih tzu keeps throwing up stomach acid? Not enough food??

Answers:
I would suggest that you take him to a vet because that can be serios! I dont know but just to make sure that he is alright! Or you can go on a website and look it up to see if it is anything! What ever you think is beat for your dog.
is he throwing up every time he eats or drinks? Has he been pooping? It can be a sign of an intestinal blockage.in which case he needs surgery..quickly..so call your vet.
have you been t a vet and ask them?
As my prince says, it could be a blockage. Please have a vet see him asap.
If this is all the time you need to see a vet. Two cups sounds like a lot of food for a Shih Tzu. Is he a healthy weight? Overweight dogs will also throw up because they can't handle the food. Also, some dogs tend to throw up bile when fed poor quality food. There are a lot of issues, many that can be quite concerning, with dogs throwing up regularly, and you probably need to see a vet, but that gives you some ideas.
Is it just stomach acid? A light to neon colored yellow? You are certainly feeding him/her enough, I would think much too much. My dogs had some problems with that and I added plain low or non fat yogurt to their twice daily meals. I have three dogs ranging in weight from 14 pounds, (part Lhasa) to 45 pounds (Collie/Beagle). I add at least a tablespoon to my little guys food for each feeding, who is probably quite near the size of your shih tzu.

The acidophilus in the yogurt assists in aiding their digestive system. If this does not help I would be quite surprised. My sister tried this on her shih tzu after I told her about it, and she now gives it to her dog at every meal as well. He no longer throws up every day.

Best to you and your dog.

PS: What kind of dog food are you feeding? A good quality food like Canidae, Wellness, Solid Gold, are examples of the types of food that offer the best nutrition for your dog. Look in the yellow pages under pet food/supplies and call those who advertise holistic pet foods. They will have what you need.
Shih Tzu's are breachaeal dogs (not sure if I spelled that correctly) which means they have smushed faces underneath all their hair.like a pug or a pekingese (which is my dog) because your dogs face is shaped like that it causes your dog to have a reverse sneeze- which sounds like your dog is hacking a hair ball. This happens when they play or after they eat. Sometimes however the thing that causes them to make that noise causes them to gag. (BTW- the "thing" I keep refering to is that thing that cause humans to snore)

My puppy used to do this and I freaked out and took her to the vet they explained it to me. Regardless, even though I know why she's doing it- I still get freaked out.
Take him to the vet.If you can't afford that go to the vet school they are usually cheaper.
ok your dog is throwing up, we need to know what color it is, if there is blood in the vomit thenthat is a bad thang you will have to go to the vet with that what to look for"Dehytration,Lethary.Diarrh. Loss,BLOOD IN THE VOMIT,Ineffective vomiting. vomiting can be a sign of disorder of the gastrointestinal system(stomach and/or intestines) or it can be secondary to a disease from a different system (such as from cancer, kidney failure, diabetes, or infectious diseases). This can make the diagnosis of the cause of the vomiting a challenge.

Complete medical history and physical examination, including abdominal palpation. Medical history will most likely include questions regarding the following: exposure to trash; vaccination history; diet; appetite; general health; character of vomitus (frequency, progression, presence of blood duration of vomiting); weight loss; past medical problems; medication history and presence of other gastrointestinal signs (such as diarrhea).

Your veterinarian may recommend a number of laboratory tests. These can include a complete blood count (CBC), a serum biochemical panel, and a urinalysis.

Fecal examination (to determine presence of parasites or blood).

Plain radiography (X-rays) or contrast X-rays (X-rays performed with a contrast material such as barium or aqueous iodine), can help to determine the cause of the vomiting.

Ultrasonography is an imaging technique that allows visualization of abdominal structures by recording reflection (or echo's).

Endoscopy 鈥?may be useful to diagnosis or remove certain foreign bodies that are in the stomach. Endoscopy can also be used for examination of the stomach and a portion of the intestine (and potentially obtain biopsies of abnormal areas).

Laparotomy - This is an exploratory surgery that involves the looking into the abdomen for evaluation of abnormalities.

and that is al that you need to know and if you have anymore questions to ask feel free to ask me, good luck.
