What do they do to treat dogs that have lost a lot of blood? Do they give them something else or do they have a reserve of dog blood? Also do dogs have blood types like humans?
Answers:
You can read and register for details go to
www.dogblooddonors.com
this is a UK site and they need owners to register if they have a dog suitable.
Actually they can. I saw something on animal planet about it. Not sure about the types though.
Yes, dogs can and do give blood. And, just like humans they need to be typed. Greyhounds are considered a universal donor so they're in demand as blood donors.
They may transfuse the dog (or cat) if it is necessary. Large veterinary hospitals and vet schools frequently have "donor" dogs and cats.
I am not sure about different blood types. I think it does not make the same difference as in humans where the wrong type can cause disastrous consequences.
yes, dogs can donate blood to other dogs.just as long as they are healthy.
Absolutely they can, I think that they only use larger breeds, I saw a German Shepherd and I think A Great Dane giving blood on a veterinary programme once.
i used to work at a animal hospital and we had a blood donor dog and cat that lived right there at the hospital so if they needed blood they would have it. I never asked about different types but our blood donor dog was a rottweiler and they put it into a mixed poodle.so i think it is just dog blood, no types.
Yes, dogs can give blood. Many vet practices, especially those with emergency services, will have a program for clients to allow their dog to give blood in return for reduced cost services for that dog. There are age and weight restrictions.
Many large vet hospitals keep donor dogs to give blood if they need it.
I think there are types but not sure about it.
One of the vet clinics in our area keeps donor dogs. They live at the clinic and stay in their kennels. Once they are done being a donor dog they are put in homes.
Absolutely! My co worker at a 24 hour emergency hospital has this 170 pound Great Dane, Ripley who is a Champion (Danes online, choose Alaska %26 blue then find Giddy Danes) who is also a life saver! He has donate blood for transfusions several times and save many doggie lives. The employees with larger dogs donate their dogs for the cause. A lot of time "plasma" is used. Yes dogs have blood types but veterinary medicine is not as concerned about that. Sometimes they do blood matches for super critical cases. If your dog needs a transfusion I hope you have a couple thousand dollars or so. Its generally serious by then.
They use human donated blood. My corgi ate rat poison and needed a blood transfusion. They used o+ Blood for him.
Yes, dogs have blood types. In fact, even more of them than people do. Dogs that are DEA 1.1 negative are "universal donors". If a dog has lost alot of blood they can get transfusions. Emergency veterinary clinics usually have donor dogs available on site or on call.
It would seem that the answer is a definite 'Yes'. Taken from a website, link below.
Wanted! We require dogs and helpful owners, who would be willing at short notice to visit the surgery and allow us to collect blood for transfusion. Is your dog: clinically healthy, fully vaccinated, over 25Kg (55lb) in weight. If so, he/she could help another friendly companion in need of vital blood. If you are interested in helping us to help them, then please give your details to reception. Blood transfusions have saved many dog lives in the UK over the years. Severe sudden blood loss can be life threatening, and a blood transfusion urgently required. Unlike human hospitals, we are not allowed by law to collect blood and store it; instead, we have to arrange blood collection for a specific patient at the time of need, and are totally dependant on one of our healthy patients volunteering at short notice. It is important that any donor is fit and healthy and between 1 and 9 years old, For details of blood groups, see 2nd link below: Canine blood groups
There are 8 major blood groups in the dog, labeled as DEA (dog erythrocyte antigen) 1 to 8. These are illustrated in the table below (go to website). The major antigens are DEA 1.1 and DEA 1.2. Dogs can be positive for either (not both) DEA 1.1 or 1.2 or are negative for both. Naturally occurring antibodies occur in 20% of DEA 3-negative, 10% of DEA 5-negative, and 20-50% of DEA 7-negative dogs
Dogs can and do give blood. My mums dog had transfusions from her parents. They have to match the blood type the same as with humans. Don't know if they hold reserves, but vet hospitals have standby dogs who regularly donate blood.
The tech's at the animal clinic we use brings their dogs in to donate blood.
Dogs can give blood, but as far as I know there isn't a doggie 'blood bank' where supplies are kept in reserve. So to transfuse a dog, a vet would have to have enough donors on hand. Some vets use their own pet dogs for this. If the blood loss was very severe, it might not be possible to get hold of enough donor dogs in time.
I don't know if dogs have blood groups though.
A good question Helen and I have had dogs all my long life and to my shame even though I have had transfusion myself I have never ever given that a thought as to whether there is a blood bank for our dear little friends and whether their blood is grouped but I'm sure someone on here will tell us!! and I hope your not in the position whereby you are asking for a particular reason if so good luck and Vets to-day have come a long way from the old days
Yes dogs can give blood. Did you never watch animal hospital?
yes dogs can give blood. Most vet surgeries will have large dogs on register as blood donors.
