Can anyone tell the pros and cons of caring for a beagle dog?

I'm in the process of adopting a young beagle (my nephew is 8 and it seems small enough yet boyish enough for him) but we've never owned a dog before.
Any suggestions, tips, etc?
Answers:
I love Beagles, my brother has a pair called Smith %26 Weson There are beautiful dogs, always happt and very obedient.

The Beagle is full of energy and does great in a family environment. They are very lively, active, and high energy making a wonderful childs companion given the proper socialization. This breed is alert and of even temperament and should never show signs of aggression or timidity. The Beagle can be very mischievous and very bold at times so proper precautions must be taken when training and/or socializing this fun loving breed.
The Beagle is an all around happy dog that makes a wonderful companion for many different families. This breed adapts to many different environments and lifestyles, if not all. The Beagle is very eager to please, and is very intelligent however training must be consistent as this breed tends to lose interest and focus on something that catches his attention. This breed does extremely well with children, and can do exceptionally well with other pets if socialized properly.
i had one that was very sweet, but he was kinda dumb
Beagles can be a LOT of work.
Pro: loyal, smart, small in stature
Con: smells, stubborn, stronger than they look

Thats just scratching the surface. For children a beagle is not a fun dog. They are not very active nor are they great to play fetch with. This is not to say a beagle is a bad dog, just not what kids seem to like in a dog.

If you have the space and time, get a lab- perfect kid dog.

Final suggestion is for you to find a rescue dog that is 2-3 years old, housebroken and comes from a rescue group or foster home (versus shelter). This way, you will know considerably more about the dog and its personality. Foster and Rescue organizations will also know more about the medical condition of the dog, as well as have access to several dogs that would be the right fit for you.
Snoopy-dog! They are really a fun breed. They are a hound so be aware that the barking will not be a soft whisper but a deep woo woo. They also need quite a bit of exercise and play time. They are super smart so don't let him/her get bored. They are really good with kids and people. If it is feasible look around for a doggie training class. These are lots of fun for the whole family plus it gives you the chance to establish yourself as the pack leader while showing off your smart new dog. My first dog was a beagle and my mom used to have her stay on the back porch with me while I was in my crib and she was working in the backyard. If I cried or anyone got near me my wonderful beagle girl would bark like crazy. Congratulations on your new pup.
I hate to be a wet blanket but beagles are high energy not-particularly -affectionate dogs. They have a very high prey drive. They can also be difficult to house train.
A young lab or golden from an established breed rescue would be a better choice in my opinion.
Hi well start off the way you mean to go on %26 seek a training school to get first hand professional help in potty training %26 educting a young puppy. The simple things like making him sit before you place his food dish down for him all helps in the further training %26 very easy to do.
It is far easier to train good habits in from the word go than to let them get into bad habits %26 try %26 get them out as this is far more difficult.
When puppies are small we might think it's real cute when he barks %26 barks playing but as he grows so does his bark %26 this can become annoying so better to not encourage bad habits that later we will regret.
I have heard so many time as a trainer myself the dog problems like the dog is nipping at my hands.when in fact this is how they had played with the puppy encouraging him to play with their hands. However when it is a bad habit I will always hear how bad the dog is BUT NEVER HOW BAD THE OWNER IS WHO TAUGHT HIM.
Many many times I hear the same old tale but the blame is always thrown at the dog %26 never the BAD HANDLING.
No such thing as a bad dog,Just bad handlers
Training is th key to a happy pet,a happy household %26 a great relationship of man %26 dog.
Regards Jake
a beagle is going to howl a lot. they all do it. and they like chasing things. i hope you have a big yard
We have a beagle and she is wonderful. She is very loving, but also very stubborn. She is really good with my kids and other pets, but she is very stubborn. However even with all of her stubbornness I wouldn't trade her for the world.
