can anyone tell me how to keep my minpin from getting in the trash?
Answers:
put the trash in a cabinet (it's own or under the sink) and take it out every day
As soon as he gets into the trash tell him no and give him a little swat on the behind (just enough to get his attention, never enough to hurt him). Then make him down-stay (lay down and stay there) for one minute per month of age up to 5 minutes. Anything more than 5 minutes is just wasting your time and the dog's.
If he has already gotten into the trash make him down-stay while you clean it up for one minute per month of age. Never call a dog to you to discipline it. that's the prefect way to get your dog to NOT come to you when you call him.
If he's a sneaker and waits until you are not there, put red pepper into the trash before you leave. He'll get one good snoot full of it and think twice about going in there again.
Also, I strongly recommend getting a training book from your local library or bookstore and learning how to discipline your dog yourself. The only REAL difference between you and a "professional trainer" is that they have read books and tried it, while you haven't.
Every time you catch him going for the trash, get his attention by clapping your hands or whistling. Once you have it, take him into another room and pet him for a moment.
Or when he starts to get in it, push his nose away and tell him no firmly. Did that with hubby's beagles and now they rarely bother to sniff it as they go out the back door where it sits.
Of course this means you'll have to watch him constantly, but if you can't do that then try getting a covered can. One that has some type of lid on it. It might discourage him if it's covered.
