You are going to need to be a lot more specific on what you are looking for your dog to be. You also need to consider if you are going to be able to take care of him for the next 10-15 years. Also know that many places where you want to rent do not allow any pets.

If you have the time, space, and money, go to the humane society and check out some of the mutts. Hybrids tend to have less health problems than your "pure breeds". All you are paying for is the papers. Unless you are going to breed more yourself, one of the first things you do with a dog is fix them after the vet looks at them.

Dogs with long hair mean more maintenance and grooming. Dogs with a lot of wrinkles mean extra close cleaning.

Personally, I have a lab/pit bull mix. Both the lab and pitbull have an excellent temperament (careful about pitbulls though, the media has it so that some apartments outright refuse to allow you to have pitbulls period). The pitbull has short sleek hair which means little or no grooming. Both the lab and pitbull are pretty smart which means it is easy to train.

If you want a smaller dog, get something like a rat terrier. They are short haired dogs, extremely smart, and very loyal.

I wish you the best of luck. The best idea would be to go and look up stuff on the net and make your opinion from what you have available in your life. A dog is a lot of work but they are so much fun!

Check out the Lhasa Apso. They're very very hearty, (live an AVERAGE of 16 years), don't shed, most people with allergies don't have a problem with Lhasa fur, they were originally bred in Tibet as a sentry (warning or alarm) dog, so they're very observant and protective of their human! I love my Lhasa, Barkley Joe. He's traveled in every state with me in a semi (and marked his territory in every state, too!) He knows lots of tricks and is very intelligent! Just know that now matter what dog you get will be a member of the family, and should be treated as such! They're a lot of responsibility but also can provide years of fun and companionship! Good luck!
The best breed of dog to get is one that fits your lifestyle best - in personality, size, activety level, coat care needs, etc. You have to do research - one size does NOT fit all. And when you buy a purebred, buy from a breeder that belongs to their breeds national club's most local chapter (find at www.akc.org, which is also a good start to learn about breeds you may like) that tests %26 certifies their breeding dogs free from genetic defects known to that breed. That is the best way to ensure a healthy, well adjusted pet you will enjoy for many years, plus you will have the lifelong support of the good breeder when any questions arise.
CHIHUAHUA'S!! they are so cute. I own a chihuahua and he is so adorable. He has lived in the Country and in the City. He is tiny so he can go anywhere. Most ppl think that Chihuahuas are Yappy and loud. but mine is not at all. I Breed Chihuahuas and they are one of the most lovely dogs you could have.
Best breed of dog.. the Mutt that you fall in love with at your local shelter.
Go to a shelter and find one that you like there.
