Beagle question. Anyone have one?

I want a smaller dog cause I have a smaller back yard. Its seems like beagles are very mellow. Are they too mellow? Do they bark at strangers when approaching the house?
Answers:
My first dog was a Beagle, Savrina by name. Beagles are working dogs, so no they are not mellow, and yes they will bark when strangers approach the house.
Temperment.
The Beagle is a gentle, sweet, lively and curious dog that just loves everyone! A happy little tail-wagger! Sociable, brave and intelligent. Calm and loving. Excellent with children and generally good with other dogs, but should not be trusted with non-canine pets, unless they are socialized with cats and other household animals when they are young. Beagles have minds of their own. They are determined and watchful and require patient, firm training. This breed doesn't like being left alone. Consider buying two if you will be gone a lot. A Beagle has a loud baying cry that was a delight to hunting horsemen, but can be disturbing to family and neighbors. Beagles have a tendency to follow their own noses. They may take off on their own exploration if let off their leash in an unfenced area. This last is definitely crucial. Our dog was hit by a car on just such an impromptu exploration.
Well, they howl. A lot. It's actually what they're known for.
I haven't heard about being too mellow, or actually mellow at all, but they are also hunting dogs. They've got an extremely strong sense of smell, and will go after any scent they catch, so I'd advise a fenced in backyard.
beagles are not mellow at all ! .my son had one, and finally had to give it up, beacuse it was driving the neighbors crazy, with all its barking and howling !.he even had tried a shock collar, and that did not help hardly at all !!.if you want a mellow dog, that is smaller try a Shetland sheepdog.they are smart, good watchdogs, and yet very mellow most of the time.they do require some exercise or walking, because they are sheepdogs by nature, and need to have some exercise..all the people i have spoken to, about these dogs, that owned them, had nothing but high praise for them.i was thinking of getting one, when my son was young, but his mother and i got divorced !! you might also want to consider some terrier breeds.they are great dogs..only beware they are diggers.so your back yard must be well-fenced and enclosed securely !!.go to petfinder.com.this is a site for rescue groups.just enter your Zip code, and breed selection, and be AMAZED at how many great choices you have !!.i recently adopted a Great Pyrenees mix from them, and my dog Sylvester is awesome !!.check it out.try it.do a good deed.adopt a SMALLER DOG today !.good luck to you, in your search for a SMALLER DOG as a new pet !!.most adoptions run between $ 50 to $ 200 maximum, for a wonderfull dog, that will be very happy to be your new pet !
Nope, a beagle would not be happy in a small yard.they need lots of excercise and a large yard to roam around in. They also bark and bay ALOT.you would have complaints from neighbours! Beagles require lots of attention, training, and walking.you should definitely not get one without doing alot of research.
BEAGLES ARE NOT MELLOW, I DONT KNOW WHERE YOU HEARD THAT FROM, THEY ARE AS PLAYFUL AS ANY DOG, IF YOU WANT A MELLOW SMALL DOG, GET A POODLE OR ANOTHER TYPE OF SISSY DOG.
I have a Beagle/German Shepherd mix. Beagles make fantastic family dogs, but they are not always mellow. When out hunting, they can be quite tenacious and aggressive. If you are looking for a dog that would be good with family but also give you some protection when you need it, they will bark in warning. They are also known to be pretty vocal, stranger or not. So if you are looking for a dog who will give you a heads up if something is going on, the beagle would be a good choice. If you are looking for something more aggressive, you might try another breed, or a beagle crossed or mixed with a more aggressive breed.

My dog, being part German Shepherd, is somewhat more aggressive than other beagles that I have known, but she is not very likely to just up and attack anyone, either, making her a great blend of both breeds.
Beagles bay (howl), and are not watchdogs at all! They have alot of energy, and tend to roam if given half the chance (it's a trait of any hound breed). Making a dog live in the backyard is cruel - please don't do that. A dog needs to be part of it's "pack" - not exiled to a lonely life in a backyard.
It really depends on the individual dog. Some beagles are more mellow than others. Some can run all day, like my Daisy Roo, and others prefer to lay in the sun and sleep all day. Puppies will sleep a lot- so if you get a beagle and you want a really mellow one get an adult. My purebred beagle whines excitedly when someone approaches the house- I have been discouraging the howling and it's working- she basically barks like any other dog.
they are good pets they will bay but you can teach them to stop real easy. Let you dog bark at strangers that is one way to let you know of someone approaching the house plus if a stranger tries to break in their baying will stop they No one wants to rob a house when dog is barking.
