best way to teach a puppy tricks..?
Answers:
Positive reinforcement, be it treats, praise or loves or all of the above. Most puppies/dogs will respond well to treats and I've found that it only takes a tiny little bit. you can break apart one treat and get a lot of mileage from it and it won't fill your pup up too much. Good luck!
loads of treats!
Repitition..lots of it.
provide 10 min of training and say the command at least 3 times a day so she knows it and stick with one command for a few days or untill he gets it.and give it treats every time he does it right
take it to obedience school or get a training pets video
Did you just get a new puppy? Seems like you have more than a few questions. let the puppy out of the crate, spend some time bonding and worry about the rest later.
Persistence, repeatition, constant praise and positive re-inforcement and above all, treats.
Repetiton.
Praise evrything good.
Don't be too hard if they don't listen, they're getting bored of not understanding you so be patient when it doesn't listen and max up the praise when something correct is done. If they do something right, repeat it a couple of times while it's fresh in the mind.
Before giving commands, plan a library of clear words, one for each task. Dogs eventually gain a vocabulary of around 200 words but they need patience, and repetition every day.
My 1 year old rottweiler now understands about 100 words and quite a few combinations of words also.
Use one word commands and eye contact is everything. Also don't say the command again and again. Get the dogs attention and when eye contact is there, speak your command.
Away from training times are some lessons for you which make training easier.
Firstly hold the dog still and look into their eyes, saying nice 'baby' things. This makes the dog happier to look into your eyes during training.
Also as a puppy you must assert dominance early on, and I don't mean beating or tormenting. Every morning get the dog to sit still and perform a quick check of it's ears, paws and clean it's eyes. If it starts to wriggle, say 'hey' like you mean it.
Then when finished, tell the dog 'all done' or 'finished' and play a fun game or 2. Pack leaders in the wild perform basic health checks on all the other dogs so you're putting your place at the top of the tree early on, helping also with any other behavioral problems later on.
Do this every morning and they come to enjoy the attention and feel more confident of their place in the pack, under you.
