Boxer Owners..I just rescues a 70 lb male 2 year old boxer. What kind of food is best?
Answers:
Basically a good brand of dry food, I own two boxers whom are both very spoiled, and have to buy various canned foods to mix with their dry to get them to eat it. I basically feed them what they like in dog foods, they always get treats, and love pig ears. They are also very playful and can't have enough balls, toys esp the squeeky kind, they love them. Good Luck, excellent breed you will fall in love with this dog.

My Boxers always do best on Pro Plan (Chicken or Beef). They digest it better %26 have less gas (common Boxer problem).
A premium dry food. Follow directions on pack. Feed twice daily. A serve of fresh bones once a week
I feed mine rappers.
Everyone has there own opinions on food. Personally I check the ingredients. I dont like foods that that have wheat in them especially as the main ingedient (this eliminates alot of foods but it just seems like junk to me and not right for a dogs diet). I always lean towards foods with a meat product as #1 ingredient and with rice or corn following.
I have a boxer mix (half boxer, half other). I came to find out that this breed is very likely to have food allergy. I would consider a low allergen food. This may help if he does have a potential for the problem. I did a lot of searching for a decent food that is moderately priced and will not cause him problems. I settled on Purina One lamb and rice. Lamb is the number 1 ingredient. It also does not cause allergy to my dog (which is actually why it is on the market, it is a good alternative for dogs who have allergies because lamb is usually not a problem). You may consider starting him out on this, instead of waiting to find out he is allergic and then you have a big vet bill down the road.
Definitely a dry food that has meat as the number one ingredient. Boxers are prone to allergies, so stay away from the fillers (oats, wheat, corn etc.) If they're way down in the ingredient list, you should be o-k.
Also, be sure to get a "Large Breed Formula". These have the right balance of nutrients for larger dogs in order to protect joints and bones from injury due to their weight.
The website given by the first answerer is a great tool to decide which food is best. There are also sites regarding "home-cooked" meals for your boxer and other dogs as well. If you have the extra time for the TLC, your Boxer will love the home-cooked food.
Keep toys around! Boxers love to play and can still have that "puppy playfulness" even at 2 years old! Mine love squeaky toys, just watch for damage to them. My dogs tear up a toy after a couple of weeks! Check PetSmart for a "Cuz", fairly sturdy squeaky toy that he will love. Also get a "Kong" for chewing. Boxers get bored if not stimulated and I have had issues with mine chewing when bored. The "Kong" is indestructible (so far) and they play with them for hours.
Also, google the "Boxer Crazy Forum" for a group of Boxer lovers. There is so much useful info on their forum, and you get to "meet" other Boxer owners!!
You will fall in love with your new fur-baby quickly. They are the greatest breed I have ever owned!
Look at the ingredients. There should be no corn(ground or corn meal gluten) or any by-products in the first 5 ingredients. If the first ingedient is a *-meal, it should be chicken meal or lamb meal. not just meat meal. Chances are, if you can buy it at the local grocery store, don't. Brands like Merrick, Canidae, TimberWolf, Innova are some of the best you can buy. The extra money you spend on quality food, will be saved on vet bills in the long run.
Eukanuba is best. It is a high priced food but it will take much less of the food to give them what they need and will produce much less waste! Good luck and good for you for saving them!
I feed my Boxers Flint River food and they love it. They get 1/2 can split between them mixed in with the dry food. They eat it and while it costs more than store bought brands, it is well worth it as it has human grade food in it and it is baked with NO PRESERVATIVES.
You will love him as they are great dogs.
I use to use Euakanuba's lamb with rice. As previous owners mentioned, boxers are prone to gas and foods with lots of soy provoke this problem. Science Diet is to be avoided. Boxers have problem digestive tracts and the wrong foods will also give them diarrhea.
Recently, I switched my two boxers from the Eukanuba to Costco's Kirkland Premium Lamb/Rice food, which is almost the same and sells for half the price. Of course, I am also a sucker for the little beggars' whimpering so they wind up getting table treats too. Surprisingly, the human food does not seem to bother them,
